Saint Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on August 15, 1195, as Fernando de Bulhões to a wealthy and noble family. Celebrated globally as the patron saint for finding lost articles and finding husbands, St. Anthony remains an enduring beacon of humility, faith, and study.

Life of St. Anthony

Education & The Call to Coimbra

Fernando began his studies at the cathedral school in Lisbon. Despite his wealthy family's plans, he entered the Augustinian Abbey of St. Vincent to pursue scripture studies. Seeking greater quiet away from constant visits from his noble friends, he later transferred to Santa Cruz Monastery in Coimbra, Coimbra then being Portugal's capital, where he was ordained a priest.

The Transition to the Franciscan Order

In 1219, while working in hospitality, Fernando met five Franciscan friars on their way to preach in Morocco. When news of their martyrdom arrived in Coimbra in 1220, Fernando felt a profound urge to live a charismatic, simple Gospel life. Receiving permission to leave the Augustinians, he joined the Order of Friars Minor, renaming himself **Anthony** after St. Anthony the Great.

Storm in Sicily and the Chapter of Mats

Anthony sailed for Morocco to preach, but was struck down by a heavy fever. His return ship was blown off course by a massive storm, forcing him ashore in Sicily. In 1221, he traveled to Assisi for the famous **Chapter of Mats**, meeting thousands of friars sleeping on mats. Soon after, he retired to a secluded hermitage in Montepaolo, Italy.

Preaching and Teachings

Anthony's preaching talents were discovered unexpectedly at an ordination when the scheduled speaker failed to show. His voice was loud, clear, and rich; his memory was extraordinary. Anthony preached against heresy, greed, and luxury throughout Northern Italy and Southern France. He taught theology in Bologna, Montpellier, and Toulouse, living his final days in Padua.
